what do you guys think this might be?

the car hasn't run since I bought it in October, and it sat in a junk yard for a while... maybe it just needs fresh oil?

It definitely needs fresh oil... And because it's an E28 it may need the guten part treatment.

Failing that, I recommend running concrete and some chain through the bores and using it as a mooring block.

sounds normal to me ;)

some fresh 15w40 or 20w50 oil and a valve a adjustment may help
