    Blown head gasket.......new head?

    1990 325i

So I just put this top end on not 9 months ago and I had an $11 hose blow and took the head gasket with it. I am pissed. It got hot, I limped it home and did a half-ass repair till the next day. The wife took it to drop the kids off at school and it got hot again and she said it stalled 3 times getting it home but never went into the red zone. Regardless, I fixed the hose and when re-filling the coolant up came good ol' oil in my water.

So the question is, hearing all the information provided, do you think the head has cracked and needs replaced or do you think I can have it shaved and do a gasket?

drove it while its hot? almost likely its cracked. Hose must have poped and there is no coolant to the sensor therefore, the temp didnt reach the red, because there is nothing to read. It wouldtn be a stretch to believe that there are more damages than just the crack head.

      Like?

The car starts and runs fine. I havnt drove it far enough to see for sure, but there is surely oil in the coolant, but no water in the oil.

Oil in the coolant means a damaged head gasket on a car with a manual transmission. But on a car with an automatic transmission it could be the head or the transmission intercooler in the radiator. Regardless, if the gage reached the red zone and you continued to drive the car there is an excellent chance that the head gasket suffered damage. In most cases the head won't be cracked, but it will have warped and will need to be re-surfaced. Any good shop can pressure test the head to see if it is cracked.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

Well, it didnt quite hit the red zone. We stopped before it got that high. I drove it tonight and it hasnt gotten hot again yet. I will check oil and water levels in the morning and see what is what. Thanks for the input guys.
