    hartge cam from b23?

i'm "this close" to yanking out the B23 from my E21 and replacing it with a B25, simply for the "modern" ignition and fuel delivery system, as well as the slight bump in displacement...

my M20B23 has a hartge cam, and i'm wondering if i can use it in the B25, AND, if it is a worthwhile endeavor.

can it be done/should i bother?

You should send the 323 head AND cam to me, and I'll check for you ;)

      possibly.. the head is CLEEEEEEAAAN.
it's a "200"casting, if that means anything to you.

in all seriousness, should i just throw the head onto the B25? the cam? anything?

the 200 head is the same casting as the eta, so I would think that the dome on the B25 piston would not get along with it. As far as the cam, check the specs on it, and see if they compare favorably with a stock B25 cam, or perhaps one of the more popular aftermarket units. That is about all I would do with it.

          thank you...

i'll see if i can find any identifying marks or numbers.
my fingers are crossed for the head having a hartge stamp on it. i've yet to get a good look.

I'm bored and did some research for you. Here are the cam specs for the h23 from a guy who was having a regrind done:

I would keep using that cam if it is in good shape and if you know it is a Hartge cam and not a stock b23 cam.

Edit- On second thought, you say it is in an e21, I skimmed over that at first. That info I posted might not be relevant to your cam, because it is for an e30 b23, so a 731 head and several years down the road. All e21 6 cylinders used 200 castings, the 731 head was only used in e30s.

Hartge did have a hopped-up b23 model called the 323i RS and I'm sure it had a special camshaft, but info on that is sparse at best. So who knows if both (e21, e30) m20b23 Hartge cams are the same, and it wouldn't surprise me if there were more than 2.

What makes you think you have a Hartge cam in the first place? Do you think it is from an e30 Hartge car or from an e21? It's unlikely you have a complete un-marked Hartge motor. Especially because you say it is a 200 head, which means it is from an e21, even less common than Hartge e30s.

the PO told me it was a hartge cam.
additionally, the car came with some random hartge items. a grill badge, a steering wheel (still waiting for the wheel to arrive. the PO replaced it with a later momo), headers, and a gauge pod.

as soon as i get a couple some free time, i'm going to dig in a little deeper with a flashlight (and a camera, if need be.) perhaps it's got some neat stuff. or maybe just some random crap was thrown at it!

IIRC also, the 200 cam on the B23 should be a 7 bearing cam head. The only ones that were 4 bearing were the eta's and those can be drilled for 7 bearings. that, and possibly the valve sizes are the main difference.

yes the m20b20 and m20b23 "200" casting heads are drilled for 7 bearings. Intake and exhaust valves are the same size on all 200 and 731 heads, including eta 200 heads. The 731 is still superior to the 200. The 885 head for the 325i got the bigger valves and dual valve springs.

so, logic would dictate that IF i do indeed have a hotter cam than stock, it would make more sense to stick it in the 885 head. no?
(bigger valves and dual valve springs)

Drives me nuts that a terrific cam grinder is just down the street from you guys but they need a cam or two to copy!
