    Problem: Cold Start Surge Occasionally

BG: I have an e21 with a swapped M20B25 from a 1989 325i. New fuel lines, new o2 sensor, no vacuum leaks, gaskets good. Didn't change injectors or other sensors. (Purchased from a good guy on this forum)

Occasionally, when starting the car cold, I put it in gear to move it or something before letting it sit and warm a bit. If it warms up - no problems - the car just scoots and the engine is great.

If I don't wait a minute for it and just move it a few feet, i.e. rev it up, when it settles back to idle, it will hunt or surge a bit until it warms more. When it is warm, it's fine.

Any idea what this could be? Coolant temp sensor?

Possibly related issue: when doing my first high-speed high-rev run (post swap) through some twisties, we noted a fuel smell, kind of like it was running rich. No evidence of a leak anywhere visible. When driving at lower rpms, there is never such a smell, even if it is high-speed highway cruising.

    Thanks for any input.

Pic of swap for the hell of it:

That could be a sticky ICV. Remove it an clean with carb cleaner until the vane moves freely.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

Pulled and cleaned. Part looked brand-spankin' new when removed.

Will update if problem resurfaces - though now with the summer coming on, remains to be seen how many cold-start days remain.

Cleaned and problem came back. However disconnecting ICV stops fluctuations.

        Indicates that diagnosis was correct.

Did more cleaning - if this problem continues will buy a new ICV.

        Thanks for the help, Jlevie.
