Why not? These aren't $100K supercars, they're 20 year old BMW SOHC engines. Fram filters are just fine.

+1. Ive run Frams for a while, but recently picked up a mobile 1 filter (it was on sale)..it is larger, has more capacity. Thought that could help a lil... but honestly Frams are just fine.

As long as the don't fall apart inside. Which they sometimes do.

For the same reaon you should never buy a Distributor cap from AutoZone. They will fail. It's like doing a half filter swap. For the same price as the Fram you can get a much better filter and a little bit more assurance.
And if I had a 100k super car I doubt I would care for it as much as I do my E30!

Mann or BMW filters ONLY: WalMart high mileage 20W50 or Rotella 20W40. GTX 20W50 is OK too, but it doesn't have the zinc levels of the WalMart High Mileage.

If you don't know your cars history, drain oil until you are 1 quart low and add 1 quart of Marvel Mystery Oil and run it for 200 miles or so.

Dudes: I've worked in the auto-parts buisness for about 4 years now and you do NOT want to use a Fram filter. They use cheap cheap paper media that is glued to cardboard cap that is glued to the thin metel sleeve. None of the cheap "PH" series have anti-drainback valves, and only some the more expensive ones Extra Guard do.

If you want to cheap out of a good-quality filter like a Mann or Mahle (which I don't know why you would, Blunt can send you a box for resonable monies), at least get a Purolator from Advance Auto or a Wix from O'Reilly/Checker-Shucks-Kragen. They are very good quality filters, if not quite as good as a Mann. Mobile One filters are top-notch, but more expensive than OEM.

Uh Oh this is turing into another oil thread. I found this somewhere and thought it was interesting reading. Wish they had done this with more off the shelf oils though.

Personally I think having an anti-drainback valve makes a Mahle and Mann filters worth the money. I was very surprised with the reduction in how long it took the oil pressure light in my dash to go out on startup after changing from a Fram to a Mann.
