    These BMWS are addictive.

She had been sitting for years.
So I got another 320 sedan off of ebay for $300. She made it the 600km back to my place. She is to good to use for parts so I'm got to try and get this car fixed up for my girls Bday.

TJ and I went to work bringing her back to her former glory but when we took the head off . . . . It was scary. The head was caked in old hardened crap, everything is blocked. How do we clean it out, Can i use something like seafoam on it (some kind of engine treatment), can i pump it full of CRC or a degreaser or do I pull apart the head and clean it piece by piece.

The car didn't come with any history so I was going to change all Fluids, filters, leads, plugs, Flust the power stearing, change fuel pump and Injector cleaner, Radiator, Fix IS board in the cluster, Anything elce I should do. Any sensors I should have a look at?

How can i tell if the timing belt is ok?
Anything elce i should be looking at?

    Thanks

Take it to a head shop and get it checked out, cleaned and reworked. You can go on the cheap by just getting what needs to be replaced, replaced. Have them lap the valves and if needed put in new seals.

All good ideas and others might through in there opinions. If your just wanting an around the town car; do what you mentioned prior and then fix what is breaks.

Replace it. There inexpensive and the alternative could be more costly.

Without taking it to a shop you are taking a chance... that said...
You could take it apart and clean it.
        - You will need a spring compressor to get the valves out. Upon taking them out, align them in the order and place them from which they came. Don't put a valve in a different place.
        - At least order you some new seals upon putting everything back together. just because of the unknown of what the soaking will do to them. Your choice.
        - Once it’s bare... soak it.
I have never done a "at home head rebuild" so I could not tell you what soaking agent would be best... but if it where me I would try Seafoam. If you are patient you could soak it for a few days. The longer it soaks the longer your agent will have to penetrate the grime.

The only problem with the info you have provided is the description of the "cleanlyness" of the head. Usually, if an engine has been mistreated, buildup in the coolant runners, then it has probably ran hot. If that is the case then you may have an issue by droppping the head back on without resurfacing as it could be warped. Water could leak into the chambers right away or very shortly there after. Also you are taking a chance on reusing the head bolts as these are believed to be "torque once" bolts. The short while i have been reading up on these cars... i have not known one person to reuse them. Not saying it can't be done. Being you are in the situation you are...?

        Good luck.

I've been looking everywhere for seafoam but all the mechanics think I'm talking about some magical cleaner that doesn't exist. I havent been able to find seafoam in Australia. Any ideas?

Order it online. Off hand I can't think of a comparison.

                    uploading pics is kinda lengthy.
                    - upper left of this page <User CP>
                    - under Networking (upper left side) <Pictures & Albums>
                    - <add album>
you have to make sure your pics are the right size (600x600)
                    - once you are done, you should see two address boxes below the picture
                    :Picture URL
                    :BB Code
                    - you want to <highlight> the address and <copy> it.
                    - go into new post of thread (picture that has mountain and sun) <insert image> above.
                    - <paste> the hyperlink.
your done. i believe you can preview it by hitting<preview post> at bottom of page.
