What is this sensor and do I need it?

I have an e30 that I'm building into a track car. Somewhere along the way the sensor that is on one of the spark plug wires separated. To me it looks like the pickup for the tachometer. I can't really find a reference to it in the Bentley book or on here. The engine seems to be running fine and the rest of the car is stripped out. Can anyone tell me what it is and if I need it and if so where to get one (a part #)?

The is the Cylinder ID sensor. Its purpose is to tell the DME when to fire each injector bank for timed injection. Without that sensor the DME reverts to firing both banks at at the same time.

The sensor is not available as a separate item and only comes with an ignition wire set. A new set of wires would be a good idea, just because of probable age of what you have.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.
