    Water Pump Leaking

I just bought a 89 325i and the water pump appears to be leaking. Do i need to replace the timing belt if I change out the water pump? I would like to keep this as easy and low cost as possible. I'm planning on pulling the engine in a few weeks, but I need to get it smogged. Also where can I buy one of these? Will most auto parts stores have them, or will I have to order it online?

    Thanks

when was the timing belt last done? might as well do it at the same time.

    you can get a T-belt for $20-ish

As cheap as a timing belt and tensioner is, I'd replace those when changing the pump. Especially if you don't have proof of a recent timing belt change. ContiTech is the best belt kit and a Graf pump is what you want. I don't know of any auto parts houses that stock those, but you can get the parts on-line in short order (overnight if you are willing to pay for that). I'd add a new thermostat to parts list since you'll have the coolant out.

With a helper it is possible to change the pump w/o removing the timing belt tensioner & spring. Not easy, but possible.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

It was done 45k ago. And I guess it makes sense to do it if I'm doing the water pump.

At 45k you are close to the life of the timing belt (60k), so it makes sense to replace it now.

Yea except I'm not going to be putting more than 1000 miles on it until I pull the engine. I understand the need for preventive maintenance and all that, but since the engine is coming out in a month or so. . .:???:

Just did the install. It's such a nice feeling when you turn the car on and everything is working. :) Replaced the timing belt, water pump and tensioner. Now just need to put the hood and washer tank back in and I'll be done.
