    Exhaust Manifold hardware

I was trying to replace the exhaust manifold gaskets/heat shields. While trying to remove the nuts from the studs, 9 of the 12 came off, 3 or 4 of which were nut and stud, the other 3 were stripped because I was the first person in 24 years to try and remove them and they were completely rusted. I was looking on pelican parts for which size I needed. The vehicle is an 86 325e 4dr. The only stud I saw was listed for a 325e coupe (they're probably the same). Also they have listed locking nuts, and copper nuts. What do I need?

    Thanks

I'm pretty sure the studs are the same, but don't quote me. I'm using copper nuts. I Can't imagine typical nylon lock nuts working for the manifold, too much heat, I'd think.

copper lock nuts are what they come with or atleast copper coated

This is the locking nut they had listed, kinda looks similar to what was on there.

It makes sense because the copper would not have rusted like these did. This is the stud they had listed.

I just want to make sure that they are 10mmX35mm not 8mm or 6mm they also have.

I'd go with the copper nuts, personally. Also, this might answer some questions. I randomly searched on a '84. If you enter the last seven of your VIN, that site will tell you exactly what you need.

This has to be the most confusing picture ever. #7, the stud looks like it is going through the gasket where the manifold connects to the exhaust and then into the hole where the stud that connects the manifold to the block should be.
Which is it? Pelican Parts lists "Exhaust Flange Stud, 10 x 35mm, 3 Series, All, (1984-91), As Needed" which is the size that is given in the description for part #7 on that photo but also lists Exhaust Stud, Head to Manifold (8x40mm), E30 318i/iC, 325/e/es/i/is/iC/iX, As Needed.

I may be returning them, we will see.

M8x40 is the correct size for the studs that hold the manifold to the head.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.
