sweet jesus. there are 4 different flywheels?!

I am helping my friend with the clutch on his 1985 Canadian import 325e and I ordered a new Sachs kit from RockAuto. all was well until I pulled off the trans and pp to find that I had a twin mass flywheel with reference sensors (325e) which has an unsprung clutch disc and a small pressure plate.

now, that wouldnt be so bad in and of itself, but RockAuto sent me a clutch kit (again, for 1985 325e on the website) which is clearly for a mid 1986+ 325E with the single mass ETA (reference equipped) flywheel as it was a thicker pressure plate and the clutch disc is sprung.

I pulled out my collection of 5-speed swap parts to find that this new clutch kit is the same one as my 1986 325ES car but the flywheel on his car is just mystifying because it's not a normal twin-mass (which I also have one of). it is thicker, heavier and carries that very unique unsprung clutch disc and thin pressure plate.

the clutch kit also has a pilot bearing with a center hole that is far too large for the trans input shaft but the perfect size for the clutch alignment tool.

my dillema is: do I just tell him to order the clutch kit for that twin mass flywheel or do I have him order a 1987 325E flywheel and do it that way?

if we swap to the newer single mass wheel which I suspect we will, can I re use the flywheel bolts? will the clutch fork and throwout bearing be the same between the two setups?

    Thanks!

you should use new flywheel bolts, as they strech just like head bolts. but some people just loktite them and they never have any trouble.

+1 with the flywheel bolts but the clutch kit will be the cheaper option than ordering a single mass flywheel but either way will work

as I said, the clutch kit for the dual mass is $250+ and a NEW single mass flywheel is under $80.

I'll ask him what he wants to do as far as flywheel bolts.
