three weeks ago did timing belt, water pump, thermo and wp-->thermostat upper radiator hose (all preventative). put everything back together but buddy forgot to zip tie the replaced hose back to the engine. drove car a couple days and found out why the hose needs to be ziptied. started smelling a little coolant in parking lot one day, opened hood, brand new hose shaved down by clutch fan and pinhole leak spraying coolant on radiator.
removed brand new hose, replaced with another brand new hose. ziptied new hose away from clutch fan, put everything back together. refilled reservoir with 1/2 antifreeze/water and bled. ran car, bled again, ran car, bled again until all the air was out. filled reservoir again.
drove car back home (2 hrs) and had no problems since. this was 2 1/2 weeks ago, and for some reason ive still got a coolant smell when i get out of the car. ive checked every hose connection, every hose, the water pump, radiator, everything and cannot find a leak. took bottom undertray off and ran the car, got under it and no leaks anywhere with car running. im not blowing smoke and im maybe an 1/4in low in the reservoir tank, if that (looking at tank cold vs hot when i filled it before). no smells inside the car (i.e. heater core).
only thing im thinking is maybe bad seal on the reservoir cap? the thick flat oring is kind of ripped but it still looks like it seals fine. would this cause the constant smell or am i missing something?
cliffs: replaced timing belt, wp, thermo, hose 3wks ago. clutch fan scraped new hose, had to replace again and ziptie to motor. refilled/bled/refilled system and been driving for 3 weeks. no visible leaks when car off/on, but constant coolant smell (engine bay only, not inside) when shutting car off. suspect bad coolant reservoir gasket?
