I hate making threads like this.

But I need your collective knowledge and experience. So, I just did a bunch of maintenance on my 325i. Cap, rotor, wires, plugs, air filter, fuel filter, o2 sensor, and I seafoamed it. I put the new o2 sensor in after running the seafoam out of the fuel. It ran beautifully for about 2 days, it was more quiet than I even knew these engines could get, and it had a calm healthy idle.

Then... it started sputtering, which is not something it did before. In first gear when accelerating from a stop, and in 2nd and 3rd gear under heavy acceleration.

Anyone have any idea as to what would cause this, suddenly, after a tune-up? I'm thinking vacuum leak so I replaced the breather hose and the ICV to Intake Manifold hose, which did not help and may have actually made it more noticeable. I'll further pursue the vacuum leak idea, if that is the consensus.

I've searched for threads about sputtering, but I'm specifically interested in what would cause it suddenly, after a tune up, and after running perfectly for 2 days after the tune-up.

    Thanks

Sea Foam may have cleaned the tank really well and clogged your new fuel filter? Or, if your fuel pump's little plastic screen thing fell off in the tank (it's happened to me) it might have gotten gunked up.

    Just thoughts...

Very interesting. Clogged fuel filter does make a lot of sense.

      Thanks

loose fitting plug wires are not all that uncommon. Double check to make sure they are tight on the plugs.

            and on the cap

did you seafoam before or after the plugs? I've seen seafoam crud up plugs once

I did check that, they pop off pretty easily, but I think they are making good connection.

After, I'll pull a plug out and check. Thanks

Check your fuel pressure regulator for vac leaks, because if it leaks vacum it also leaks fuel.

I did check that, put a new vac line on it.

Do you think the Seafoam may have caused the new plugs and O2 sensor to get gunked up from some of the dislodged carbon deposits? Beyond that, im stumped?

Maybe the plugs, as mentioned before. I put the new O2 sensor on after I had already run most of the seafoam out of the system, so I'm confident that it's not the O2 sensor, I think.

I am having the same problem - or a similar problem - my #5 was misfiring, changed the plug - still misfiring - pulled the wires - fouled new wires. Replaced them and it is still doing it - took it to a local indy shop and they are thinking maybe a broken ring on that cylinder - gonna talk to them tomorrow - so I will let you know if that was the cause

(my symptoms are the same as yours - and I recently did the same work you did)

                        keep you posted

Oh, wow. I didn't even consider it could be something serious. Thanks for the info.

Did they check injectors che13? If its dropped a ring it should have more symptoms like high crankcase pressure, Smoke, obviously low compression in that cylinder. I hardly see that a ring will drop with only that symptom. Try taking that spark plug out and running it briefly and seeing whether any oil is feeding out or fuel is feeding out. just have a fire extinguisher handy. It sounds to me like an injector or a bad rotor
