What to check after over heating?

My heater hose busted and the coolant temp gauge barely hit the red zone for a second then I shut it down. The hose was replaced and the car runs cooler again but the engine sounds a little different. It also feels slightly down on power. The noise is a very slight whine that gets louder with engine speed. I'll try and get a video up later today.

I checked for oil in the coolant or coolant in the oil and both are pretty clean. What else should I look for?

    Thanks.

Water pump? Perhaps running it dry messed up the bearings?
      Dunno just a guess.

The most logical cause of the whine would be water pump. But a few minutes of work with an automotive stethoscope will reveal the source of the noise.

Thanks for the tips. Replacing the water pump would be a good idea since I wanted to change the timing belt sooner than later anyways. Because the coolant and oil and still are clean, can I rule out any head damage?

Head damage doesn't always show up immediately after an overheat. Hopefully, you shut the car down soon enough to avoid that, but only time will tell. Don't worry about it until symptoms of damage show up (overheating, inexplicable loss of coolant, white smoke from the exhaust, milkshake in the oil, etc).
