Loud engine + sputtering

I have 86 325es and when I start it and its cold it sputters a bit and then after warming up it goes away. I checked my cat out and it looks pretty old and in need of change could this be the issue. Sort of a related question, when running my engine sounds a little loud, since this is my first e30 I wasn't sure if thats normal or not but one of my friends says its just an old engine, any ideas guys I would gladly appreciate it.

Any time I hear that set of symptoms my first thought is intake leaks. Other causes are possible, but they aren't something to pursue until intake leaks are ruled out. That is best accomplished by finding a shop that can run a smoke test on the intake.
