Hey lateracer. I really liked your post. You mind me asking what you paid for the deglaze, block prep and cam install. Im thinking about something in the future and want to keep it cheap.
I actually did all of it myself in my back yard. It took a long time (for me) and it's not too difficult, but I would recommend having someone who knows engine rebuilding on hand to help out if you're like I was and have never rebuilt a motor. If I would have had an experienced engine builder on hand they would have told me to measure my ring gap before installing pistons, or pony up for a good bore gauge to take cylinder measurements, but I didn't...and now I get to do it all again :)
So I saved some money by rebuilding in my backyard and got about 22 hours of fury out of the motor (16 of them under racing conditions). Then I broke a rocker arm and lost compression in cylinders 3 and 4 and had oil fouling the plugs in 5 and 6. I still haven't torn down the block to figure out exactly what's wrong, but a leakdown test and massive oil fouling points to 3, 4, 5 and 6 having problems with the rings. Probably because I screwed up the install when I didn't check ring gap or I didn't take any readings from the cylinders b/c I didn't have a bore gauge.
Long story short, if I was in a position to where I needed this car every day to get to/from work, I'd be pretty bummed. I messed up somewhere and the cheaper way to do it would have been to have a machine shop do the full rebuild - about $1,800 when I priced it out here. But, this is a track car and I'm trying to learn how to build a decent motor, so I'm trying to convince myself that everything is OK and this is just a learning experience.
Block prep with deglazing is around $200 without reassembly here in San Diego, which seems to be a pricey market compared to what others pay. Overbore costs more. A cam install on a removed head is worth trying yourself, but I think head assembly here runs around $100 if you pay for it.
