    1988 325is over heating

i am not using the heater so i installed a plug on the back of the cylinder head like the AKG kit, i pluged up the line that goes through the throttle body and hooked up the larger expansion tank hose to the thermostat where that would normaly hook up to the heatercore line

i can see the temp needle go up if i sit and hold the rpm and about 1500

i am sure the system was bled

was i wrong to plug the back of the cylinder head?

    any other suggestions?

That is the correct way to eliminate the heater. Either there is air in the system, or you have some other problem.

The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

ok well i noticed when the engine is up to temp, the upper radiator hose is a little warm, the hose that goes from the top of thermostat housing to the water pump is hot,the hose that connects to the lower part of the radiator is warm but where that same line connects to the thermostat housing its hot.

maybe my thermostat is stuck closed ?
(just checked thermostat in boiling water and it works fine)

iam going to reconnect the heater lines and see if its still over heating

My cars temp used to creep up pretty fast when idling.. I had bled the system thoroughly multiple times but it kept on creeping up. Well finally I got stuck in some heavy LA traffic and I blew the hose that goes from the thermostat to the firewall and to the heater core. After replacing it I noticed the creeping temp problem was gone. I'm pretty convinced I had some sort of air bubble in there and that actually removing the hose got rid of it... I can't think of any other explanation..

try lifting the car up so the bleed nipple is as high up as possible, then it will be easier to get all of the air out.

Its all about air in the head..Turn on the heater and allow the air to exit the head..

not sure what you mean by this hahah coolent is running through the heater core all the time dosnt matter if its turned on. i cant see how turning the heater on will bleed air out of the cylinder head lol

well i bled the system per bentley instructions twice. it seems to be ok now, took it for a short test drive (1/2 mile) got on the gas only once for a 1 gear pull. than just cruised rest of the way. pulled up to my house and let it idle for a couple min and the needle goes a little past half and stops.

Not talking about coolant, its the air, think?

it should stay slightly below or at half. don't bleed it. drive around and keep an eye on it. If nothing changes it might just stabilize. If not bleed again.

My friend had to gravity bleed for a week to stop over heating. We also put in a new radiator, the leak he had in his radiator was sucking in air somehow.

He means jacking up the front end so that the bleeder on the thermostat housing is at the highest point.

well i took it for another test drive this time for a few miles, its seems to be fine. all is well. guess i just needed to bleed the system a couple times.

Nothing out of the ordinary to bleed the system more than once or twice. :p
