alright well i guess i'll just save the money and buy a miller maf conversion with war chip and turbo injectors. i'll just stick to my afm for now.
btw i have figured out that if you take black cover off the top of the afm. you will see a spur gear thats held on by a metal arm. if you move the metal arm and spin the spur gear anti clockwise one tooth only. you will get way better throttle response and idle is little better. my car had normal throttle response which wasn't that great and so i took a look inside the afm and messed with the spur gear and i got way better throttle response and idle.
just putting it out there if anyone wants to improve the throttle response just a little on their stock e30 with afm.

ive done a MAF conversion on my M20.. not too insanely hard to do. im tihnking about trying a MAP conversion as from a tuning point of view it shouldnt be much different from tuning for using a MAF.
i used a volvo 850 T5 MAF and retrofitted the stock IAT sensor into it. my line of thinking is that if i went for a MAP swap i could ditch the MAF, install the MAP and retain the stock IAT sensor and only have to play around with the AFM transfer map.
@ george, if ur M30 is running Motronic 1.3 then u could basically duplicate something like my M20 setup, i like the volvo MAF because the round part and the actual MAF sensor come apart and i have seen a few cars in the junkyards with the same fitment/type of MAF but with a larger housing (pipe) than what i have atm so there is potential to upgrade to a bigger housing while keeping the same MAF which would really cut down on the time taken to mod the AFM transfer map as it would just have to be scaled up/down across the range instead of totally re-tuned for a different MAF.Leave a comment:

Your chips are vulnerable cause they are so easy to make a copy.
I really doubt that the 2-3 people here that are capable of copying your hardware for a MAF conversion, would. (Assuming a MAF conversion would require some hardware?) - I'd say you're safe. Build away.
(but make one for my m30 first! ;) )Last edited by george graves; 09-18-2010, 01:01 AM.Leave a comment:

And I made a MAF conversion for 3.2l M20 motors 3 or 4 years ago, but only sell it through Metric Mechanic to people that bought their M20b32 as if I sold it here, it would just get cloned.
Originally posted by germancarsonlyI have a professionally "Cloned" copy of that chip. It is 100% true to the original. It is a great chip and you will notice more mid and high end power with it. Honestly, your engine will even sound a little different as it goes up the RPM scale with the chip.
How about $50 "shipped?"Leave a comment:

I stand corrected then. I was not aware that these cars used speed density, I thought that the AFM in these stone age management systems was simply air mass. Thanks for clarifying, I was under the wrong impression then. :)wrong
they work on entirely different principals. MAF systems measure the MASS of air directly. an AFM works more like a MAP sensor, it's measuring pressure and inferring the air mass based on a set of assumptions. These assumptions are built into the VE maps inside motronic. a MAF uses a simple voltage/air mass transfer curve, not a VE map. it's not a matter of plugging in a MAF and adjusting the fuel output because they don't even use the same algorithm.
I apologize for spreading bad information, that's what I hate to do.Leave a comment:

This is true.
Also, the only difference between a SOHC and a DOHC is only one letter, so to be completely honest with you, I'm positive that you can install two cams on any single cam head.

lol @ this thread..
u cant just grab some random MAF nomatter how many terminals/wires it uses and stick it in with a random chip. u can do a MAF conversion or u can buy the miller MAF. it has been done with E36 MAF's, hyundai MAF's and Volvo MAF's (with retrofitting the stock air temp sensor into the wiring) but u would need to find a thread or info from someone who has done it and copy it to the letter using the sane exact part number MAF and also u would need to be able to tune the AFM maps in the ECU or in a program and either use the values the other person did and hope for the best or buy an emulator, wideband, get compatible tuning software and tune it yourself.
MAF conversion are not like M30 AFM swaps where u can stick it in and the car will run but not great... it wont run at all or will barely run and wont rev or will run rich/lean, not be drivable, not pull up the revs, etc, etc, etc.
if u use a war chip u still face the same problems mentioned above plus the added bonus of the miller editing software not allowing u to edit AFM maps and no miller will not be able to send u a tune for god knows what MAF u want to stick on there with unknown wiring. probably for the better tho as less chance of damaging ur engine because u seem to have the impression mapping in motronic is very simple... u have no idea lolLast edited by DmcL; 09-17-2010, 03:24 PM.Leave a comment:

that is why there is no MAF DIY, other than guys smart enough to hack the ECU firmware (nobody here) or guys like brody with the resources to R&D a true conversion. he's not just selling you a random MAF at a huge markup that you could get off a junkyard car and do the same thing, it doesnt work that way.Leave a comment:

well im going to go with a war chip either way now so i can have a good tune for when i go turbo. i should be able to make this 3" maf off of the 95 volvo turbo work with the chip. since i have enough fuel all i need is little better air flow to help make the mixture right.Leave a comment:

MAF is a Maf, just grab a SAFC and tune after you've retrofitted it. If you know which wires are 0-5v output to the ECU it's not hard to wire in an aftermarket maf. However, having the correct MAF values is. Your car will run like shit unless you matched up the maf perfectly to the size of the pipe that you replaced it with. ...but the likeliness(sp?) of this is very slim.
to be honest, the main difference between a MAF and a AFM is the name. They're both going to give a signal to the ECU in terms of air flow. This isn't a MAP based system so it's not like any other signal is needed.Leave a comment:

heres the website i found from miller to do the wiring. its the same wiring for all the maf sensor's. i just am going to buy the war chip for 350 off their website.
