Starter?

I just did a head job by the books so everything else should be buttoned up right...

loud clicks and no crank usually is a stuck starter. have someone sit in the car and turn the key to start. while they do that take a hammer or something of that sort and firmly tap the starter. let us know if that works out for you.

how many times did you tap it and was the person holding the key to the start position? if you can figure it out try and jump the clutch relay...im assuming its a manual. and can u push start it?

also check to see that no wires on the starter are loose or off.

If you are sure that your starter connections are right and that the battery is supplying proper voltage, this might apply to your situation--

I built a 2.7i engine for a friend's car a few weeks ago. When I installed the engine it wouldn't crank. The starter solenoid wasn't coming out far enough to engage the flywheel (sticking part way..). The odd thing is that it was working perfectly fine before I took it out. The starter, flywheel, harness, and transmission were all the same parts that I took out of the car. Sure enough, the starter went bad just sitting on the floor for a couple weeks. It cranked right over with the new starter. Strange thing, but it could be the same for you I suppose.

I should also mention that the 1 year old BMW crank sensor from the same car failed while sitting in a box awaiting re-installation. Odd stuff, that car really didn't want to go anywhere..

I smacked the shit out of it 3 rounds of cranks (I have a smoking wire coming from the oil level sensor so we weren't riding it too much)

I dk how to pump the clutch relay? pump the clutch?

So is a crank sensor another answer to MY problems as well? or that doesn't fit my symptoms?

Also, I'm gonna swap the starter tomorrow with one I know works...because this car has sat around for over 5 months with no starting so

so the engine cranked when you hit the starter then? if it cranked while you were hitting it then it might just be your starter.

if the car runs after a push start then i would say its not your crank sensor, unless it runs like shit, but definitely something to do with your starter and/or ignition system.

just to be sure was the person helping you pushing in the clutch while turning the key? some people dont think to do that if they dont drive stick, unless you tell them to.

as for JUMPing the clutch relay this is assuming that this could also be the issue. the relay tells the ignition system that the clutch is in and is allowed to start. sometimes that switch goes bad and will prevent the car from starting. i would say look into this only if you successfully get the car running on a push start and have ruled out that the starter is bad itself.

as for the crank sensor, as far as i know it shouldnt prevent your car from starting but your timing might be off if this was bad. but i wouldnt be able to say for sure.

i feel for you man. but dont worry you will get it squared away. see if it runs on a push start tomorrow. and trying the new starter. and go from there.

just out of curiosity has it run at all since you put the engine back together? if not then just go over all of the stuff you had to put back on and make sure its all connected and there, and that all the belts are snug and intact the way they should be.

at this point im sure you have learned a ton about the car and you will learn more. so after all the stress and frustration, you will have a running car and a ton of knowledge and experience.

You need a starter. It's pretty simple to diagnose.
