Which starter to run in a 327i

I figured I might as well replace my starter while my car is all opened up. I've converted to Motronic 1.3.

I'm wondering if I should replace my early model starter with another like it or with a late model. I know the late model is smaller, is it weaker as well? Is it more reliable? Does it have any advantages over the early model aside from weight savings?

    Thanks for any input

I ran the 84 starter in my 327i setup with 1.3 motronic. Starts up just fine!

Anybody else know the differences between the two.. aside from size/weight?

I think that is it. I have a late one on my 86 and works fine.

OK.. well for anyone who stumbles across this thread...There is ONE issue with running the late model starter: the bracket holding the starter to the engine block does not fit because it was designed for the larger body. You have to cut new holes or source a late model bracket
