All m20s run at half. Except yours apparently, because you don't know how a thermostat works.
Running an engine cold is bad for the motor. Period. BMW designed that engine to run it's best at 80C. If you're running it at 40C, do you think that makes you smarter than BMW engineers?
Your headgasket blew because your thermostat was either faulty or you didn't put one in and subsequently drove it for thousands of miles. Not because of your fan clutch.

But I was bumping in order to see if I should switch out my current thermostat, which "supossidly" opens at 180 degrees, to one I have NIB that opens at the stock temperature.. It's NIB so I don't want to use it unless it will actually have an effect on my engine's temp.Originally posted by TSI♫ Rust flecks are falling on my head...♫OEM+Comment

I know.

Ok I put a thermostat actually meant to replace the OEM one as opposed to one from generic auto store..
My temperature is now sitting a little bit little little bit over the 1/4th mark. I guess that's better than sitting on the white mark before the blue?
Is there anyway to get it to the halfway point? I mean...what else do I need to do..
Additionally, theres a slight hissing coming from my coolant tank, as if it wants to fountain. Its ever so slight. Why is this happening/ should I be worried?Originally posted by TSI♫ Rust flecks are falling on my head...♫OEM+Comment

I just put in the OEM thermo that I bought from Bavauto (hardeeharhar) and it always sits at the quarter mark or just above while in motion, and while at a stand still it will just barely crawl to the halfway mark - but never above. It could be that they sent me the wrong one. In any case, I'm sure that's why my car runs a little rich is because the car is not fully warm.Me: "I can't wait to redline my car!"
Mark: "Didn't you just break a rocker arm?"
Me: "Yeah, I don't think I've learned my lesson."
Mark: "You never will."Comment

I put a new thermostat and it still didn't fix anything.
I'm going to stop driving it for a bit, it's running way too rich and using way too much gas :(
Is there a way to check if the temp sensor is faulty?
I mean, I've seen it rise a little to the 1/4 mark after the blue, but perhaps its just not functioning properly? Because I've changed the thermostat 3 times, it must be something else. What should the resistance of the sensor be?
EDIT: Seems Bentley saved the day and answered my question on the resistance of the sensor.Last edited by lolcantturn; 11-17-2010, 07:48 PM.Originally posted by TSI♫ Rust flecks are falling on my head...♫OEM+Comment

So before you changed the headgasket where did the needle sit?
I still think your temp sensor or its wiring may be faulty. How hot did the temp gauge go up to when you had the coolant leak

I pulled over and shut off my car before the temperature could get hotter with the leak.Originally posted by TSI♫ Rust flecks are falling on my head...♫OEM+Comment
