Jesus Christ there are idiots on here.

Spraying any sort of solvent into the intake through the AFM will not clean it. You need to clean and inspect the board. And for the love of god don't use carb cleaner or brake cleaner; those are powerful solvents... something you don't want on your circuit board. There are aerosol cleaners specifically for electronics. Get one of those.

Replace that duct taped intake boot.

Check for vacuum leaks.

You're running super rich. Usual culprit for this is a bad O2 sensor... why that wasn't the recommendation in the first reply is beyond me.

If your temp gauge is accurate and you're running that cold, it could also be causing it to run rich.


Running rich for extended amounts of time will foul your catalytic converter so be prepared to replace that as well.

are you replacing it with the correct thermostat? 80c? and maybe the sender to the gauge cluster is gone... or maybe the gauge itself..

clean the afm, the icv, and the throttle body at the same time. since you're there and already at the cleaning. use carb cleaner. brake cleaner. etc. pull them off the car (except the tb) and clean them. shoot cleaner up the tb and watch it turn super dirty brown on the way back down.

get a new fricken intake boot. they are only $20.

Yep 80C. What do you mean the "sender?" The coolant temp sensor? I don't think its the gauge, two weeks ago when I was having overheating problems due to a bad headgasket it went all the way to red so I don't know.

I cleaned the afm, the icv, and throttle body. brown stuff was all over my intake boot.
I think my intake boot could have leaks, but if it has a vacuum leak my idle sure doesn't show it..my idle is pretty good.

So your car is running cold? Have you checked/repaced the thermostat?

I've replaced the thermostat 4 times..still runs cold.

Please don't listen to anyone telling you to clean an Air Flow Meter by spraying something into the intake. They obviously have no idea what an AFM is, or how it works.

Adjusted my valves, cleaned my AFM with brake cleaner.....
I'm getting 15mpg city now with very conservative driving. As in, I don't go over 2000rpm at any given moment.
Not satisfied though, my car still runs ice cold so it's most likely running rich as fuck.

Put some marvel mystery oil in the gas. This stuff will really richen up your gas and make the motor run better.

Also check for vacuum leaks. I didnt think I had any until I took off the afm/throttle body tube and found a giant rip under one of the metal clamps.

Also check to see if your o2 sensor(the plug connection comes apart easily) or try replacing it and check the gaps on your spark plugs.

I already seafoamed my car quite a number of times (300000+ miles on a 22year old car is quite the smoke show) so I'm assuming marvel mystery oil works the same as seafoam..correct me if i'm wrong.

The previous owner duct taped the intake hose pretty well :giggle: so I hope there isn't any leaking.

Gaps are set, i'll check out the o2 sensor.

Sparkplugs are the OEM Bosch replacements brand new
Should I clean my injectors (or have them cleaned) ?
No, but I'll do an AFM test tomorrow to see if it needs to be adjusted or cleaned.

Another thing to add, I do have a slight sparkplug arc misfire that happens twice or so in a minute...but I don't think thats correlated.
