    CPS Reference Pin Broken

Ok, so I've had a no start issue with my '86 eta, and I tracked it down to a broken reference pin (on the flywheel). This is the pin that the crankshaft position sensor (reference sensor) reads.

I've seen a couple posts through search that people mention this but never answer my real question: Do I have to pull the transmission to replace this, or can I swap the pin through the hole for the CPS?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

    Here's what I'm dealing with:

It is typically fixed by replacing the flywheel, you might be able to tack a tit back on or build up some weld and get a signal again.

Bentley manual said that there's a replacement pin for it, but RealOem has it as discontinued.

I'm most likely going to have to try weld, or something similar. My main concern will be gap to the CPS

Not going to be fun with the tranny in... How old is the clutch? Maybe easier to replace it??

Less than 20k on the clutch, I'm weighing the pros and cons of each lol. My main concern is getting it done by thanksgiving, I need to drive to my family dinner

Has anyone seen this done without pulling the transmission?

Anyone know what causes this? Rust or clutch dust build-up maybe? A technician at my work suggested pressing in a roll pin from the outside to avoid removing the transmission.

Does anybody have an early eta flywheel that could grab a measurement for the height of that pin for me?

My measuring caliper uses inches, here's a pic with dimensions of my setup that ran fine 'till I did a motor swap.

Obviously, I wasn't able to measure the actual height of the sender itself since it's welded into my flywheel, so I measured the height above the flywheel.

I think it's possible to put a new magnet in through the hole you've identified, but it would be like the expert version of the game operation. Maybe pull off the bell housing bottom cover and disconnect -but not remove - the trans just enough to get to it.

Did you do this repair yourself? It seems like probably one of the simplest ways to take care of it

Yeah, it's a 30 second job. I don't know why people mess with other fixes. This one is quick, easy and permanent.

Is that just a piece of steel? Let's hope it's not much more than 30 secs with the transmission still in the car... we will see hopefully tomorrow

                            Fixed!

Fixed in car! Drilled out the pin/further into the flywheel, tapped it, and ran a 10mm bolt in with plenty of lock-tite. Time will tell the reliability, but I'm feeling pretty confident.

Pic is hard to see, shouldn't have used a shiny bolt for the sake of the proof pic...
