    Cold start won't idle

87 eta, on cold start it will start then stall unless I hold the gas down and keep the rpms at 1k for a little bit, then it will idle rough till it gets warmed up a bit. Once it's at operating temperature it runs great, doesn't stall at stop lights or anything, idles fine at around 700. Ideas? I'd like to throw a remote start system in it soon cause it gets pretty cold in NH in the winter, so a car that idles when cold would be nice.

A block heater is a better solution than a remote start. It is easier on the engine and gives you a warm car immediately.

The most common cause of starting/idle problems is one or more intake leaks. A smoke test of the intake will find them. There are other possibilities, but until intake leaks are eliminated or ruled out it makes no sense to investigate those possibilities.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

Alright, I'll try that. Could you point me in the direction of a good block heater?

It has been quite a while since I've bought one for a BMW and I can't recall where I got it. Try a web search.

Dont have any suggestions, mine m20 does the same thing. No issues when its warm out but i just have to help it out for a few seconds when its cold.

Don't let Jim fool ya, remote start is a NECESSITY in EVERY car I own, and always will be.

Coming out to a nice cold car in the summer or a nice warm DEFROSTED car in the winter is a requirement, period. Easily the best single mod you can do, IMHO.

            However...it won't fix your issue.

The remote start does not run the throttle. You would still have to go start it.

Idling a cold engine until it warms up or the A/C cools off the car is rough on the engine. If you want to be nice to your engine, start it and let run for 15-30 seconds and then drive gently until the temp gage goes above the blue.

I don't know about you, but I like getting into a warm car in the morning. Everybody I know lets their car idle warm. Seriously doubt I'm doing it much harm.

If Jim says it causes it pain, I will believe him...I just don't care. My comfort is more important!

Yeah, and if I destroy the engine because of it, all the more reason for an m30 swap =D.

Just run some motor treatment through the gas.

MArvel mystery oil being my personal favorite. Does good things for your motor:up:
