    Alternator movement

It seems like my alternator on my 84 325e has alot of movement/give. The belt on it was squeaking for quite some time but I cured that with belt conditioner.. However, my alternator has about an inch of play on it when I push it with my hand. Is it supposed to have some play? Is it just the mount bushings that are warn out? How much tension/slack should the belt coming off the alternator pulley have?

    thanks.

The pivot bushings could be bad, or the mounting could be loose.

A squeaking belt is one that isn't properly tensioned or is old and glazed. If the belt has been on the car for over a couple of years, replace it. A reasonable gage of tension is if you can twist the belt a half turn with thumb and forefinger. Less than that and the belt is too tight. More than that and it is too loose.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

Your alternator should not move at all. It sounds like the bushings are shot.
As for the deflection check bentley I forget. I do know you don't want to over tighten or you could do more damage.

The (very) general rule is one inch of deflection. Don't overtighten the belt, you'll make the bearings wear faster.

It's common for the rubber mounts to chew out on those alternators, the rubber can be replaced or you can put a metal bush in.

Mine seems to something like nylon.

Change that belt immediately and chuck it in the trunk as a spare, it's way cheaper than replacing alt bearings and far more convenient than breaking a belt.
