e to I conversion. Do I have everything?

I've got an 85 eta and I'm putting an 89 I motor in it. I've got the motor harness and ecu. Will I need the radiator for a 325i? Will I need to switch the inst cluster to a 325i vdo one? Thanks for the help.

Unless you change the water pump on the engine to the old style (pre 8/97) you will need a 9/87 or later radiator. I think you 85 cluster won't have the white coding plug on the front face, which would mean that a cluster swap will be needed to get a tach that will go to 6500rpm. You would need to use a cluster from a 325is built between 8/86 and 8/87 for the fuel gauge to work correctly. If you use a later cluster you'll have to swap the fuel gauge.

Oh yeah, you'll have to modify the 89 engine harness to have an operable tach and econometer. Said modification will also be required to provide a start signal to the DME so that the engine will run.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

will also need to modify the harness so it doesnt catch on fire. Im not fully sure what wire needs to be fixed as i havent done this (yet) hopefully someone will chime in and tell us both

When transplanting a late harness into an early (pre 9/87) car there is one wire in C101 that needs to be cut to prevent burning up the harness. That wire comes off the main relay and in an early car goes to a pin in C101 that is grounded. The original engine harness doesn't have the pin in that position. I don't have my wiring book with me, but I believe it is pin 20.

The early harness has the tach, econometer, and DME Start signals on a 3-pin connector pigtailed off the engine harness at the DME connector. The late harness routes those signals through C101. The easy fix is to scavenge the connector off the early harness and splice it in.

this is only for cars with square c101 connectors splicing into the round c101 from late model right?
                  ?

so since my 11/85 has a round c101 i dont need to worry about it catching fire? i dont think thats right

the 3 pin connector is the one right next to the firewall through hole for the harness right

Yes, you do need to worry about this since the car was built prior to 9/87
