    Valve adjustment question

I searched and can't seem to find it, but does anybody have the spec for when you're trying to take the measurement from the cam lobe instead of the valve stem? I have reason to believe the valve stems in my eta may potentially be concaved, and would prefer to get an exact measurement off the cam lobe instead. I know some do it this way, as it IS more accurate, and I've done it on my previous M30 vehicles before, I just don't know if the specs are the same for M20 or M30 rockers.

    Thanks!!

I've never seen a spec for clearance as measured at the cam for an M20 engine. I suppose there could be a slight concavity at the valve stems, but I've never see that either. Just use the spec for adjustment at the valves.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

I cant remember exactly but i think it is .001- .002 tighter than at the valve. If you have a dial indicator and clamp on base you set true clearance at the valve and then see what clearance is at the cam and do the rest of them that way. I did that on a set of very concaved valves on an Alpina B6. The owner took it to another shop a little while later and they told him the adjustment was WAY out and readjusted them for him. He called after that to ask if i knew why his valves were so noisy now . ha ha, yes i do.

Why do idiot techs outnumber the qualified so bad?

I use .008 on intake, .009 on exhaust on the cam.

You can teach someone how to "be" a mechanic. It is almost impossible to change the way someones brain functions. ( common sense, thinking outside the box, etc) This of course applies to all professions, I always think about it when i go to the doctor...
