M20 Top end Noise - Video

What is this noise????? Under very light throttle / coasting I get a rattle / chatter from the motor which can be heard in the video.
If you load up the motor with more throttle or engine braking the noise goes away..... Any ideas?

      vid works for me.

have you done any work on the engine before this happend ?

sounds valvetrain related to me like maybe the valve lash on a rocker is waay out of spec.

does it make this sounds only when driving?
will it make the sound at idle or revving while parked ?
      :borg:

Only does it driving with minimal engine load. With more than just off idle throttle it wont' make this noise.

try to locate where the noise is coming from when you open the hood and give it gas from the throttle cable...from the description you gave us it could be anything really.

this could be way off but go look at your fan, does it look like its been hitting anything?

check your motor mounts if it does, check your motor mounts anyway actually

oh and get a new SI board

No mechanical fan. Car cools just fine in the winter w/o one anyways.
Mounts are brand new. I just built this car after killing my 90 cabrio. (tree)

i'm going to run the valves down tonight just to be positive they are good. This is the same motor out of my cabrio so it's definately a known comodity.

Si board wayyyyyy off on the list of needs right now ;)

Was this the motor from your wrecked vert? I'm asking because 2 of 2 m20s I have seen from wrecked cars have had the rocker arm shafts disrupted. My car was making tons of valvetrain clatter and it turned out that the due to the roller arm shaft being misaligned it caused the clips to contact the actuall rocker arms. I wish u could veiw the vid...but I'm on my phone

Ok so hate to be bumpin a slightly older thread but I checked all the valves and no better. Definately doesn't do it cold. Pulled the belts. Not an accessory. Changed water pump as I did find some play in the bearings. Not it either.

I'm seriously running out of ideas!!! aaaaack! I'm going to put it on jack stands today, (rear) with the back in the air and in gear. It's almost impossible to get the motor to make the noise when the car's not moving so i'm going to see if i can finagle it into making the noise this way so i can hear it more closely and pin point it.

Hadn't considered that possibility. I'm pretty certain I am, but i'll double check that one...
