    can I use an m20 from a 525 for a replacment on my 325i

as the title says. looking for a cheap running engine to replace my m20 in my 89 325i. my girl overheated it recently. could I use an m20 from a 525i and it be a direct bolt in swap minus changing over the intake manifold?

The intake manifold is definitely the same.

The only thing different should be the motor mount arms and possibly the oil pan but I doubt it.

I had no idea obviously, that the intakes were the same. I just assumed since it was in a 5 series they would have changed a few things around. good to know since that now greatly inproves my chances of finding a cheap replacment engine.

The 525 engine is almost a direct replacement. You will have to use the engine harness from the E30 and the oil dipstick tube is wrong. The one on the 525i engine will work, but you won't be able to use the CPS and Cylinder ID mount. I sort of remember that the motor mount arms are also different. And depending on what E30 you have you may have to change the water pump. Not a biggie as you should change the pump, timing belt/tensioner, and thermostat on the replacement engine as a matter of course.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

ok. since I still have the original m20 still installed in the car then I can salvage whatever e30 parts are needed ei. dipstick motor mounts new water pump oil pan if needed. I was just looking to expand my search options for a direct replacment.thanks for the info.any and all help is greatly appreciated.

Oil pan is the same, but the 5-series oilpan have a hole in in for the dipstick.
The E30 have dipstick in the block. That is not a problem if you don't break anything, but it you do like me and smash your oilpan you have to but a new one from a 5-series.

Or you could replace the dipstick. There is a plugged hole in the block that you need to unplug. I spent several hours under the car hammering on that plug. I think it was never ment to come out! :) But it came out a last, so I could fit a new dipstick.
