    Surging Idle + WTH?

My car has had a high idle since the day I bought it. The idle will start off at 2,000 then quickly go down to 700 and surge between 700 and 1000. I've posted about this before, and was told to change the coolant sensor. I've just tested that, and as per the Bentley manual, it is working (±1900ohms @ 25 degrees celcius). I've also had a smoke test done, which showed no leaks, and an O2 sensor replaced (albeit with a used one that came with my exhaust). My fuel pump has been making noises and I've bought a new one (its on its way), but from what I've read, it didn't couldn't really cause this?

The other symptoms are that it smells like its running rich, and it apparently has a hesitation at certain times while driving. I can't confirm this because I haven't really driven it much :(

I've bought some carb cleaner to clean the idle control valve, but, *flame suit on*, I don't know where it is. If someone could point me in the right direction...

Second to last question: the intake won't reach the shield behind the grill/driver side headlight. Theres a two inch gap between the two, and I can't get them to reach eachother. Does this cause a problem? Any reason why it won't go far enough?

And lastly, which relay is which?

    Thanks.

It would be helpful to know what car you have.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

sounds like a vacuum leak. check the under side of the intake boot for holes.

if by "intake" you mean the air filter box. there should be the moisture shield behind the headlights then a small square with a hole in it for a 3 inch hose to connect to the bottom of the air filter box

Wouldn't the vacuum leak show in the smoke test?

And I'll check for the moisture shield. Thanks.

The ICV on this car should be a T shaped device with an electrical connector on the end. If cleaning it with carb cleaner doesn't solve the problem, check the idle switch in the TPS. If that checks out, replace the idle control module/
