A straight 40 weight oil is going to be awfully thick in cold weather and man not be thick enough in the hotest weather. I'd suggest that you use Valvoline VR1 20w50.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

hey, i lived in West Van for 2 years and ran my SR20det 240 and my m20 E30
all season on 10w60 gulf racing syn with no problems, i also used Motul syn.

you will be fine with 10w60 even in the summer if you want to go to the interior.

VR1 is a a good oil but honestly why choose a straight weight oil you are not getting any benefits from it, it's not a race engine.

        I use the VR1 in my M3 s14's but in the m20 I use a normal 10w40 on a normal basis.

Any regular 20w50 oil is perfect for pretty much every M20.

Valvoline VR1 and Kendall GT1 are both great 20w50 oils, high in zinc and detergents. I personally use Mobil 15w50. There is no advantage to useing straight weight oils in any street car.

Yeah, SAE30 works great in winter as bar and chain oil.

The cool thing about straight weight oil is that it doesn't have all the weird additives in it that cause it to break down and be crappy. I'd consider it if I lived in the banana belt.

Mobil 1 15w-50 doesn't seem to break down and be crappy at 5k OCIs according to my UOAs...

^I've read that unlike most dual viscosity oils Mobil 1 tends to thicken during the change interval vs. thin. BTW, I used to run 15w50 Mobil 1 in my m42. Hydraulics (lifters, timing chain tensioner) didn't like it cold nearly as much as Redline 15w50, which I now run. Still running Mobil 1 5w30 in the Mazda 2.0l, it loves it.

I wouldn't call it dual viscosity. It's not like it changes from 15weight to 50weight at a certain temp. The point is that the oil stays at a more constant viscosity across a wide temperature range than a single weight oil.

I hear you. But that's what the industry calls it. And I wouldn't run a straight weight in my DD unless I lived somewhere that the ambient temp. didn't vary more than 15 degrees or so.

It got down to -19F here last night. I'll stick to my 15w-50.

Sidenote: It took me forever to refill my diff when I changed the oil after getting home on wed. The oil was so thick I had to pour it into the pump with a funnel. Of course that's 75w-140 gear oil, but you get my point.

I simply don't see a reason to run a single weight oil these days, even if you have a more thermally stable climate. It snows in Texas, too. Don't get me wrong, I know not all SAE30 oils are the cheap $1/qt farm store special.
