    stupid idea

I'll just put this out, because I'm thinking about it at the moment.

I recently bought a 1991 325ic - it was cheap, because the timing belt had gone and the previous owner had no interest in fixing the car.

After I bought the car I proceeded to remove the head and inspect the damage. Which to my surprise wasn't too bad. One broken rocker and 5 bent exhaust valves. After ordering the parts and quick port and polish.

I borrowed a very expensive straight edge and checked the trueness of the head.
using the information from the head gasket set I measured the imperfections with a feeler gauge.
    The info I have says:
Lengthwise no more then 0.03 mm
Laterally no more then 0.05 mm

After letting the straight edge acclimatize to my work shed I started measuring.

Everything is within spec except for one low spot on cylinder #6

    Here's the stupid idea:
Should I just lap the valves and install the head or should I send it out to the machine shop?

Have the head surfaced and the valves and seats ground. The guides may need to be replaced and seals almost certainly do.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

you will need to get the head resurfaced. the seals are cheap so just replace them. you will almost foresure need to replace the guides. they can be damaged and mostlikely are from the impact. the rocker arm shafts maybe be bent or dented. make sure you have everyhting fully inspected.
        Much wow

Definitely replace the valve seals and the bent/broken parts.

Unlike what everyone else above said, your rocker shafts and valve guides should be just fine.

The lack of douchebaggery on this forum is astounding.

might check the "play" in your valves before decideing against the guides tho...i'm just sayin'. mine were a lil out of tolerance after the tragic intermediate sprocket failure.
