    Let me pick your brains

    Back info:

    '88 S ETA w/142k

Car was bought in '06 with a bad auto tranny and put away in my shop till Jan '11. Finally decided to get on road. Done since then:

    -5 spd swap
    -wp
    -tb
    -tensioner
    -thermostat
    -valve adjustment
-oil pan and valve cover gasket
    -front and rear main seal
    -new clutch set
    -new guibo
    -Fuel filter
    -Air filter
    -oil change
-filled tank with fresh fuel, was about 5-6 gallons of old gas in the tank.

prob a few others I am forgetting. I went to start the car and it will try and fire quickly but won't stay running. If I spray throttle body cleaner in the throttle body and replace the boot it will idle fine but as soon as I try and give it gas it shuts off. I rechecked timing and I am dead on. I'm thinking either weak fuel pump, clogged fuel pump strainer (or both), or clogged injectors as a result of the car sitting.

Anybody got any other ideas I should be checking?

I would check the fuel pump first off.
Injectors will not likely be the cause, but you should definitely replace the furel filter.
I'd slip off the hose from the fuel pump and start it and see if its pumping a decent amount.

Also could be a vacuum leak situation.
But either way if its been sitting the pump and filter should be replaced.

I have seen pumps cheap online, any way to buy local just the pump? When I check vatozone, advance, napa etc they just list the entire assembly, $$$$. Surely someone has figured out another application of just the same pump.

Did a fuel pressure test and determined I had plenty of fuel, then I moved onto some other unknowns. Turns out a bad AFM. Just finished installation and she fired right up. Been idling now for 15 min with no hiccups. Now just to finish making my mounts to install the miata seats into it, get an alignment, get her inspected, some NC tags and enjoy it!
