Just picked up a E and a buddy has a m20 laying around but it's a auto. As far as pressure plate, clutch etc.. What would I need to make this swap doable in a weekend??

Assuming the M20B25 is complete with intake manifold & throttle body, you will also need the engine harness, DME and AFM. Depending on what year of car that engine came out of you may need to swap out the water pump. The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

The motor is fully intact, so the DME is going to replace the full E harness?? The donor is a 89 and the E is a 84. Wouldn't the water pump just go in with the motor?BMWfanaticVR6addict

There are two water pumps, radiators, and expansion tanks used on M20 power cars. The early variant has the expansion tank mounted on the right fender well and the late variant has the expansion tank mounted on the left fender. Cars built up to 8/87 have the early style. So you will need to change the pump on the 89 engine.
I believe your car has a C104 connector for the DME START input and tach & econometer outputs as a part of the engine harness. The 89 harness routes those through C101. So that will have to be dealt with in the swap. Probably the easiest fix is to scavenge C104 from the E harness and graft it into the 89 harness. The other possible issue is that your car might have the rectangular C101 connector that won't directly mate with the round C101 connector on the 89 harness. Oh yea, make sure that if there is a wire in the body side of C101 pin 20, that you clip it to avoid frying the 89 engine harness.Last edited by jlevie; 02-21-2011, 02:39 PM.The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

Would a "i" head with the turbo be easier in the end?? Just source a used mani and turbo? what would the engine management be, the Stock "i" DME?BMWfanaticVR6addict

Swapping in an M20B25 is much easier.1988 E30 335i - 1987 E30 327i - 1987 E30 327iS Pickup - 1973 2002 Project
