I can't even count how many times I tell people the answer to this problem...

USE AN 87 i/ic/is ENGINE HARNESS. Problem solved, no spliced wires, everything plugs in like it came that way from the factory.

Dude, down load the wiring schematics for the 2 years involved and look for the tach wire (one wire) that has to be spliced into the C101 I believe. That is pretty much it. Run that wire and you should be good to go. Best way I found was to print that crap out and grab a highlighter....and a beer.

It is one of those 3 wires Black, yellow, or green.
I'll check when I get home after work. I still have all that stuff in a folder.
One of them is the tach and one is the fuel economy gauge which I never ended up hooking up.

The easiest solution to this is to scavenge the C104 connector from the old harness and graft it into the later harness. The wiring diagrams available at http://wedophones.com/BMWManualsLead.htm will be helpful.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

Google "strictly eta". Thats Fred Kim's site. He details the steps needed to resolve your issue under modifications, in the 2.8I article.

Did you change your cluster as a whole or just the tach? If just the tach, did you change your coding plug?
