    Smoke from cat/transmission

I bought an 89 325i today with an 88 M20 swap due to old motor failing. Anyway, it's my first automatic, and when I purchased it today, the previous owner said it needed transmission fluid because it was low (I believe the car had been sitting at his shop for 4 months) so he topped it off and everything seemed to be shifting/working fine.

I got home from picking it up, about 20 miles of freeway driving, and there was smoke coming from the bottom of the car (catalytic converter i believe). I didnt think too much of it because it hadn't been driven for so long.

I have been driving the car for most of the day and i opened it up on the freeway, everything seemed to be running smoothly until I parked and i saw smoke coming from the hood. I open the hood and I saw the smoke that i believe was coming from the bottom of where you refill transmission fluid.

I believe a little fluid leaked out, I dont know if the smoking is coming from fluid hitting the block? oI dont think its a coincidence thats in the two places. It's bizarre. I just hope it's not a transmission problem.

ANY insight would be greatly appreciated!!! Thanks for taking the time friends!

sounds like what you said, trans fluid leaking onto something hot...
find the leak and fix it. if you get more smoke from under hood, then its something else....lol

GL man, but remember, the car is 22yrs old, its not gonnna be perfect, but love it anyway.get to know her and she will fill your heart with endless excitement and tons of frustration. :)

This does sound like oil or transmission fluid leaking and being blown back onto the exhaust. The first step is identifying the source of the fluid, which the shop should be able to do pretty quickly.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.
