    Piston Identification

Who knows an accurate way of determining model info on pistons that's not reliant on measurements? All of the Mahle pistons have some sort of markings, but the engines are all so similar, many are useless. Does anyone have specific part numbers for the eta, seta, and 2.5l pistons?

I have 4 sets at home and I bought them so long ago I can't remember what they are - some are flat bottom skirts, others look like 2.5l, eta, etc. I know I also purchased some s50 at one point.

The SETA and early B25i ones will be the only ones difficult to tell apart and will have dome like piston top, you should be able to compare pin heights to tell them apart and the late B25 had shorter skirts. The eta will be flat top and the S50 will be flat top/dish with 4 valve pockets.

Post some pics and we should be able to help.

I'm looking for part numbers - there are several stamped numbers throughout the inside/dome, etc. I'm assuming someone knows the differences between them based on these markings - would prefer not to need to go down the route of measuring things - some of the differences in pin to crown, etc. are so minor an error could be the difference in piston/block/head match.

I have all three pistons ETA, SETA, early I pistons at the house. I will compare the markings and see what I come up with. I do however have part number for all of course per realoem.com.

I figured this belongs in this thread rather than making a new one.
Can someone help me out here? ( Newb and rebuilding an engine.)
This is my piston from my 1987 325i

And long story short I had to order another piston from Pelican Parts (http://www.pelicanparts.com/cgi-bin/...9%2C%20Each%20)
but it looks different, it has skirts. All the cuts are the same on the top but the skirt is different
