    Mystery (Oil Leak Problem)

I just bought my '85 325e. There is an oil leak coming from the drain plug (probably doesn't have a copper gasket). I haven't got under the car to check everything out yet, but one drop comes out every 10 seconds or so. I bought the car Saturday evening and I checked the oil and it was a little above the full line. I drove the car back 4 hours and checked the oil again and it was at the same level. I have continued to check the oil daily and it is at the same level even today. If it is dripping out that often then why is it still showing full on the dipstick?

magic elves living in the engine? Get a new crush washer for the pan bolt. When you pull the dipstick are you wiping it off, putting it back in and reading after you pull it out the second time or are you just pulling it out and reading the first time?

I plan on getting a washer and all for it this weekend. Yeah...I wipe it off and all. Sometimes I check it 3 times in a row because I have no idea why it'd still be full.

I'm guessing I can pick up one of the crush washers at a local part store?

I ordered about 20 (from NAPA or Car Quest) and have them on hand. They're cheap so order a bunch and be a hero to your E30 neighbor the next time they need one in a pinch.

You're not noticing the oil loss on the dipstick because you're not really losing that much oil...or your neighbor is pissing in your crankcase at night, but we'll give them the benefit of the doubt for now.

Do the handfull of washers whether it's the problem or not. Bringing those to an event with other E30s is the equivalent of bringing beer to a party.

Other common sources of oil leaks that can show up on/look like they're coming from the drain plug, which is sort of the lowest point on the pan, include leaking oil pressure sensors and leaking oil pans.
