Long story short, bought an 89 325is about a week ago that had been sitting around this guys shop for 6 years. Now, when I bought the car, I took it to 2 different mechanics and they said overall, the car was in pretty good shape and from my point of view, it was. It drove well etc etc. Had its minor problems, (which one doesnt). Now, I drove about 100 miles total today and I noticed some big problems!
When I got off the freeway heading towards my destination, the car was smoking from underneath the driver and passanger door. I pulled over right away and noticed my car had been leaking a lot of fluid and it looked like it was leaking onto the catalytic converter, hence the smoke. I popped the hood and there was smoke coming from there too, but I do not believe the motor was generating the smoke.
I took it home and washed my car, forgetting that it had been leaking because I just bought new wheels for it today and my mind was going 100 different directions. I drive the car to my friends house who lives about 20 miles away, and while I was driving, I here this pretty loud humming coming from under the back seats, it sounded almost electrical. I got to my friends house and tried to find the sound and it sounded like it was coming from the limited slip differential. Along with the really loud humming sound, my car was leaking A LOT of fluid, and it looked like it was coming from the transmission. I opened the hood and there seemed to be red fluid on the manifold gasket. I have two ideas of this might be.
1. Something happened today with my transmission, seems to be shifting normally though. When it downshifts from 2nd to 1st, sometimes its rough, but for the most part its shitfing okay.
2. I noticed that when I'm driving above 40mph, the steering seems to be making a grinding noise and I can feel it on the gas and floor. power steering might be screwed or the rack?
3. Maybe the rear diff is making that humming and is toast?
Maybe steering fluid is leaking on the cat? I don't see why that would cause the humming noise in the back of the car though?
If any of you guys have any insight, it would be GREATLY appreciated! (im taking it to the mechanic first thing tomorrow) but peace of mind would really help cause im having an anxiety attack.. :(
Thank you friends!!
Brian
