    Engine Trouble [Video]

    Earlier this week I purchased an E30 ('86 325e).

Initially when I got the car it would turnover red-line and cut off...

After changing the oil we found that there was slack in the throttle so the throttle stop was adjusted and it seemed to help....

Once its running the gas pedal has to be pumped to keep her running, Otherwise it will stall out/misfire. The MAF looks to have been replaced with a used one however, there may be issues there. There is no smoke or odd smells

The video below was taken after the quick adjustment (throttle) and replacing the spark plugs.

I know there are any number of potential issues, but does anyone have any ideas what may be causing this behavior?

    Check your vacuum hoses.
Me: "I can't wait to redline my car!"
Mark: "Didn't you just break a rocker arm?"
Me: "Yeah, I don't think I've learned my lesson."
    Mark: "You never will."

That does make sense because when I got the car the dipstick was tied up to prevent it from popping out.

I've checked the hoses and there doesn't seem to be any holes and breaks in them.

        Thanks for the replies

You have checked the intake elbow?
the three aluminum elbows on the intake manifold?
          the injector seals?
The hose from the carbon canister to the PCV?
You can hear the whistle of unmetered air in the video.
One can also hear something bad in the bottom end, as well as a misfire.

Thanks for the insight. Hidden behind power steering fluid buildup and electrical tape on the elbow I found some epoxy trying to seal a tear.

Before I do anything else with it I'm going to drop the oil pan, hoping that I don't find the "treasure" that I think I will...

Heres a post the the tear, part of my vacuum leak culprit. I'm going to check into the MAF this weekend as well.

Any insight on whats going on down here? (Really loose and Ghetto Duct Tape "Fix")

Where on the car is that tape?
I would remove it and reseal with electrical tape if it is a harness section.
That duct tape job is a water trap.

If the dip stick has to be zip tied in place to prevent it from popping out, the engine is having some issues with pressurizing the crank-case - most likely at least one piston that the rings are not sealing.

Is that knocking bottom end or head? Could be piston slap, rod knock, out-fo-adjustment valves.

I'm getting the car moved to a garage tonight so I can finally work on it a bit more (currently in apartment parking lot).

It sounds like its knocking from the bottom end, but not 100% sure. Debating on taking off the head and doing a valve adjustment or biting the bullet and pulling to oil pan to search for "treasure".

I hope to eventually do both this weekend, depending on time and resources.
