    squeaky injectors?

my eta is making a kind of high pitched bird-like sound, like a bunch of retarded cockatiels nesting in the intake manifold.

It sounds like plastic is rubbing on something. At first I thought it was a belt or pulley, but the sound seems to be coming from around the head. I had the valve cover off yesterday and it didn't seem to be coming from inside the head, but it did seem to be in time with the cam. The volume also depends on how much power I'm giving it. Like when I'm coasting I can barely hear it, if at all. So now I'm thinking it has something to do with the injectors.

    has anyone encountered this before?

My first suspicion would be bad bearings in the timing belt tensioner or a failing water pump. With the engine cold, remove the water pump belt and fire up the engine for no more than a minute. If the noise is still present replace the timing belt and tensioner. Another possibility (bad) would be lubrication failure to the camshaft & rockers. With the valve cover off, you should see oil flowing with the engine idling.

That covers the things that could be wrong and threaten the engine. Deal with those possibilities first. Then look for intake leaks as they can produce those symptoms.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

Would a clog in the oiler bar be sufficient to cause an oil shortage? I hear they can get clogged over time.

      Also, I'm taking

just because I don't know if it's ever been done, I'll be replacing the timing belt this week anyway. and I didn't notice whether it was making the noise or not when I lost the fan belt the other day, as I had other concerns (freeway construction meant I had to wait for an offramp to pull off). but I'll check it out.

I don't remember how well the valve train was oiled when I had the cover off, but this makes sense and I'll check it ASAP.

and I'd be honored. but to keep it in perspective, I think the whole sentence would be good. but it's your sig, so do whatever.
