    vaccum leak?

sup guys, new here so on and so forth. ok to the problem, i recently did a tune up and now my 87 325i is acting up, starts up fine and idles fine (a little low about 500-700rpm ish but smooth) but when i blip the gas it hesitates and if i blip it enough times it stalls out. i tried covering the air filter box and the engine keeps running which is a sign of a leak right? except when i take my hand off the hole it stumbles and dies also when i start the car up, the MPG gauge under the tach. goes from 40mpg to about 20 then shoots up to 40 again then goes down to 0. is that a sign of anything? ill try to post a vid or some pics soon, thanks again and great forum. ohh here she is btw.

yup mate looks like a leak somewhere check the intake boot and the icv valve and the lines that go from the intake to the booster hope it helps.

get some carb/brake cleaner and spray it every where u see a hose.. if u notice a change in idle u have a vac leak

update. ok so i found a small crack in the intake boot so i replaced it made it worse now the idle is all out of whack, it starts fine but then drops to about 500rpm and rises to 900ish rpm. so i did the whole "cover up the filter box hole" thing and the intake boot would get crushed from the suction so i was like WTF?! then i could hear a hisss coming from the hose that goes from the icv to the throttle body, so i replaced it and it did nothing! i still hear the hiss coming from the same area on the new hose! so i decieded to thrwo in the towel and take it to a shop. now he tells me it might be my icv i was like "no sh!t" but he says i have to replace the computer as well if im going to change the icv. now that doesnt sound right to me but hes "BMW CERTIFIED" and said he had a e30 when he was young so idk? any thoughts? anybody? :(

oh and by "tune up" i got the fuel injectors sonic cleaned, replaced a couple of hoses (all snug as a bug), adjusted the valves (0.010cm on a cold engine), new spark plugs, cleaned and painted the valve cover and intake manifold, new valve cover gasket, and changed the oil and oil filter, and new air filter, and new fuel pressure regulator. hope that helps.

ohh yes and i almost forgot to mention, after i replaced the intake boot (when it started to idle funny) i pulled the icv up towards the hood and it idled fine, but then when i let it go, it started to idle stupid again, i also took off the icv and clogged the holes that go to the throttle body and it idled fine. i konw the icv has a rubber ring that holds it in place, but mine is missing that, idk if that would be the problem seeing as how it worked when i pulled it up towards the hood. still stumped :( ........eeep

it sounds like you are having a problem with your c191 harness. If it has corrosion your injectors will not fire. It is a common failure point. Look into it.

update. it turns out it was my icv but the mechanic said i still needed to replace my Afm as it looks like it been tampered with, but otherwise the car idles fine. ohh yeah odd thing he said my car had no c191 plug, he looked for it but he said he could not find it. ok so everything was fine BUT on the way home the power steering started to get alittle hard. i would turn it and it would be normal but about 3/4 of the way and then the steering would get stiff. when i got home i noticed that everytime i would turn the wheel and the powersteering would get stiff, the idle would drop some, not alot but enough to tell maby like 300-500rpm then would go back to normal idle when the power steering would get soft again. This led me to belive it might be a vaccum leak in the power steering line but idk, was wondering if you guys might of had this problem too.

The power steering pump is hydraulic, there is power steering fluid in it not air. If the steering gets hard it's usually because you are low on fluid and possibly have a leak.

but the car isnt leaking, i left it idling for like 20min and drove it around the block and no drips under the car, its got plenty of ps fluid, i thought maybe my rack was leaking but no dice. im stumped

maybe my ps pump is going out? but what explains my drop in rpm when i turn the steering wheel? i lose about 300rpm when i turn the wheel and it gets gets stiff cuz of the ps. *sighs*
