    Timing issues

So i took the liberty of changing the water pump, timing belt and cam seal today on a 1987 325ic I bought in the last month. Unknown miles but the sticker from the last timing belt change said 1999 so I didn't want to take the chance. Upon lining up the bottom timing mark I noticed the top mark was off by a whole tooth on the cam gear. The mark was one tooth to the left (passenger side) of the actual notch. Maybe from the previous belt stretching? Well the car was running reasonably well before the change so I just put it back the way it was. Now I am wondering if I should have just lined up the lines perfectly and redone the valve adjustment? Please help!

Yes, you should line the timing marks up.

So what does it mean if it ran pretty well 1 tooth off?

your timing will be retarded or advanced. in your case I believe one tooth to the left is the equivalent of about 4-7 degrees retarded.

The marks are there for a reason, why didn't you line it up?

I intentionally didn't finish the job so I could get answers on the timing marks. I'll jump at it first thing tomorrow and line them up.

What the bentley states to use. On the bottom the O/T MARK and the notch on the Tbelt cover and on the top the cam gear notch and the one on the head.
