Things that most adversely affect fuel mileage are intake a cold running engine, intake leaks, and aged O2 sensor, or a fuel system problem. In that order. Valve adjustement, dirty intake filter, partially plugged catalytic converters, or aged ignition parts can also be contributors.

The first things I'd do would be to replace the O2 sensor if it has 100k (or more on it), have a smoke test run on the intake, replace the plugs (with NGK ZGR5A), ignition wires, distributor cap & rotor, and run the fuel system tests in the Bentley manual. I'd also make sure that the engine is running at 80C.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

Mileage improving. After finding that eBay chip in my ECU I removed it and filled my tires up a bit more and now I'm at 160miles just below a half tank. I think I'm in the clear. Was the chip forcing the car to run too rich? If I get a Mark D chip will I have the same issue?
