To get the pump out you have to take the level sender out first. 4 little nuts ( 8mm I think ) on studs hold the sender into the middle of the pump housing. Take them off and lift out the sender, it's enclosed so you'll have to hold it for a while for the gas to drain out. Keep some rags handy.

The bottom of the tank is dented and the thing on top of the gas tank, under the seat, is up and wont lock in place because the tank is dented. I cant get the pump out for some reason though. So I can't get the dent out for the pump to fit in place.

i almost bought a e30 with a rusted filler neck. i looked up old build threads on the car and the PO prior to the owner selling said he had to keep the gas below the halfway mark otherwise it would spill out around turns.
    why weld it?
just get another gas tank. drop the fucked up one, install new and roll out!
    should be a weekend job

I looked all around the tank even under the back seat. No leaks. It only leaked when I was adding gas. It holds half a tank just fine.

Welding on a gas tank requires removing it, getting all the gas out and then using a commercial cleaner. The tank must then be evacuated because the fumes are still explosive.

This. I drove a vw bus down the west coast with golf ball sized hole in the top the tank. Every time turned we left a shit load of gas poured out. You'll be fine.

    Good answer :)

Taking the gas tank out is easy.... if of course it's not rusty. Then it's a bitch. And you probably need to replace some parts while you're in there, like tank straps & rusted fasteners.

    Good luck kid.
