    high idle

my 1990 325i has been having a high idle for about a week now. prior to that, it had been having idle issue with dipping down too low. i then tested the idle control valve, tested it, looked at it, cleaned it out, and put it back in. it pretty much ran the same after that, so i assumed a bad idle control valve. i unplugged the ICV, and found that it made the idle more stable. after about two weeks (after i cleaned the ICV and put it back in), it started to have a high idle. the idle started out at about 2000 rpms, and is now sitting at about 2500 rpms. it also seems to make the temperature rise. i thought i had figured it out, but i am now more confused. help? :D

Intake leaks, a bad ICV, or a binding throttle or accelerator cable are the likely causes.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

I am 100% sure the ICV is bad. And last night I was actually thinking about the throttle cable, so ill check that out. Thanks for the ideas!

Bad TPS will also cause this... TPS tells the ICV what to do.

It could very well be the ICV but if the TPS goes out it sends the wrong signals to the ICV and makes you think its the ICV. A good test to do for the TPS is the "stomp test". A bad TPS will usually prevent the stomp test from working and giving codes.
