    Need help with cam identification

I searched high and low to answer this question before posting here, but didn't find what I'm looking for.

When I bought the car, I was told there was a Cat Cams 285 installed. However, the truth is a little blurry b/c it was installed multiple owners ago. And since some other supposed modifications have not checked out, I'd like to get to the bottom of this one.

I was never able to drive the car over 3k RPM (rod knock) before pulling the motor, so I can't describe any of the cam's characteristics.

With the valve cover off, there aren't any clear names on the cam other than a random number or two. No names like Shrick. There is also no "K" indicating a stock "i" cam. The most identifying feature is a painted dark green stripe around the camshaft.

I also pulled the cam gear off to see if there were any marking on the cam end, but nothing is there.

I know aftermarket cams usually have some type of colored stripe painted on them, so I'm pretty certain it isn't a stock cam.

Anyone have any thoughts? Or a Cat Cam with a green stripe?

    Thanks.

I have a Cat cam and no painted strip on it, it has an engraved model number on the end(I believe on the sprocket end).

Good info, thanks. I talked to another member not too long ago who has a Cat Cam 283 and he didn't mention if it was engraved on the end or not, but his did have a blue stripe.

Thought I might help somebody out by posting the solution.

It turns out that it is a Cat Cams 298*. The part numbers are engraved on the end OPPOSITE the cam sprocket, so I had to remove the cam from the head to see them. Part number is 1300527.

I meant to update this thread the other day, mine does have a blueish strip painted on it. There is also a little flat grind spot on it near the journal closest to the cam that has a little logo of theirs and the engraved number was not on the sprocket end on mine either...

Sucks they didn't engrave the sprocket end and you had to pull it to identify it :(
