    engine problems...

So i picked up a 1990 325is in pieces with a rebuilt motor.

i put basically everything together and i can get the engine running...

only problem is it wont idle and if u try to rev it past 2k rpms it shuts down and itll start up again around 1300rpms (keep in mind my foot has to always be slightly on the accelerator for this to happen since it wont idle)

if i let it die out there is a bit of smoke from the intake and it backfires pretty good. im thinking maybe the timing is off? most likely advanced a tooth or two?

i didnt put this engine together the guy i bought it from did.

im not a bmw guy, i built a high 10 sec evo 8 but this bmw stuff is new to me.

is there a way to adjust distributor timing or is it off of the cam just liek my evo?

any advice or help would be much appreciated, i kinda need this thing running asap for my daily driver since im selling my current daily driver.

The cam timing could be off, there could be a problem with the fuel system, the CPS could be bad, or the harmonic balancer could be bad.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

okay so i checked the timing it is correct. i put a different harmonic balancer on it and it seems to run a tiny bit better.

i was able to drive it between 1000-2000rpms (finally able to drive it)

but there is fuel in my intake manifold...

fuel pressure regulator possibly? or what else could it be?

im making progress here but its still not right.

The fuel system tests in the bently will tell if the fuel system is working correctly.

I know it seems stupid to say but check for vacuum leaks. These M20 engines run like shit if there are any vacuum leaks. Let us know what you find!

well i fixed all the small problems. but i decided to just break down and go buy a compression gauge. found out my first and sixth cylinders had very little or no compression...

2 horribly bent exhaust valves was my problem. just waiting on some new valves and this will run perfectly fine.

You sir, seem to know what you are doing, take good advice into consideration, and do work. Good work on figuring out the valve issue! Hope to hear good news after you install them.
