    m20 fuel pump question.

I dented the bottom of my gas tank and it pushed the fuel pump out of the top. Now the fuel pump wont go back in place and my car smells like gas because of the gap between the top of the fuel pump and the gas tank. Any ideas on what to do. And I have to need to my replace my fuel pump cause it just went out.

    Thanks.

Gently push down the dent in the tank (from the fuel pump opening) and put the pump back in. Keep your fingers crossed that you don't crack the tank and create a leak.

I'd put a 2x4 under the tank at the dent, and support it there with a jack so you don't push the dent out too far. Then use a 2x4 through the pump opening and gently tap the dent out.

I already pushed the dent out. I need to know why the pump wont fit at the top of the tank.

Will an e series pump work on and I car? I m tryin to get the bracket and pump out of an e car and mine in an I. They are the same year.

It the pump was pushed up and out of the tank I'd expect to see that the top of the tank and locking tabe to be bent. If the damage isn't too bad it might be possible to straighten it. But since the gasket must mate to flat surface the chances of success is pretty slim. I'd just replace the tank.

If both cars are the same year, which would have to be an 87 the pumps are interchangeable.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

I just did the chevy vega in tank fuel pump swap a few weeks ago. Worked perfectly. But yeah obviously fixing the tank is number 1. But you don't need to buy the whole insert just for a new pump.
