So I have finally gotten my m20 swap complete, everything is operational except the starter... I could crank the starter but it wouldn't spin the flywheel. So I got a new one thinking the bendix was bad. Same situation, what could cause this??

Check the groundstraps. There's one just forward of the starter. Make sure it's not frayed and clean the contact surfaces. If you got a new starter it might have the top post wired incorrectly. Seems most of the rebuilt ones are. It should be connected to the strap that provides power to the starter from the solenoid so that power is fed to it when cranking but provides ground when the key is in the on position. Check it with an ohm meter. If it's incorrect you can extend the wire from the top post to the bottom post and it's advisable to put 3 amp fuse in line with it.

If its spinning but not engaging it may be that the solenoid isnt throwing the gear out?Your signature picture has been removed since it contained the Photobucket "upgrade your account" image.
Originally posted by der affefirst try a finger or 2, you need to have them suck on it first and get it nice and wet to help it slip in.
if she goes for that, astroglide up your pole, have her lay on her stomach and slip it in slowly and bury it to your balls and leave it there until she relaxes. once she is used to it slam that ass like a screen door.

DTM is right, might have to pull it and bench test it. You know what else came to mind, you might have stripped teeth on your flywheel. Way to find out is take off parking brake, leave car in gear and push it ( with friends )or turn the crank ( with a large cheater bar) to turn the flywheel. It will take a lot of force. Then try to restart it. If it works after that your flywheel is missing some teeth.Last edited by billybobjoseph; 05-15-2011, 10:14 AM.

I'll take it off and get it bench tested and make sure i wired it correct. and yeah, it will spin, but it wont engage.
However, billybobjoseph, i know for a fact the fly wheel is in perfect condition, i too the flywheel to a machine shop and had them lighten, balance, and turn it. it was pretty much a brand new one.

Oh, how familar. Just got done dealing with starter issues. My issue started when I put in a new starter and it would only click but not spin. Bench tested it and no issue. Put in another new one (Name Brand Bosch this time) and same exact thing. I tried switching posts top to bottom but noticed that one is an 8mm nut and the other is a 10mm. Actually the eyelet from one wire wouldn't even fit over the top of the 10mm stud. I cut the eylet and forced it on. Then it would spin the starter but not click or engage the flywheel. Obvisouly not the answer as well.
I tried swapping the wires again and it started right up. I have no idea why it worked this time and not the very first. Anyway, what I learned was the two thick cables go to the same large stud on drivers side of the starter. Do not attach one to the other large stud that has the grounding cable going from the soleniod to the starter. Make sure your grounding cable from the engine to the chassis is clean. I found that after putting the engine back in my car that not making sure this was clean caused all sorts of issues. Easy as a wire brush on the contact solved water temp gauge fluctuations, engine sputtering at higher load, and I believe some of what I was dealing with the starter as well.
I feel your pain, I pulled out the starter and put it back in probably 5 times. Almost took it to a shop to fix it, but they quoted me 3 hrs in labor. I got good enough I could pull it and put it back in wired up in 30 min. Good luck.

For an M20 it is from the driver's side of the oil pan to the drivers side of the frame rail on the chassis. Pretty much driectly below the MAF. There is just the one ground cable on the engine as far as I know. It connects to the oil pan next the oil level sensor. It should be a pretty heavy gauge wire. Just make sure it solidly connected to the chassis.
