    Afm

Hi to all I have a 88 is, trying to resolve a bogging issue from idle, clears up after you put the pedal to it and runs fine, it happens every 3rd or 4th stop light. My question is about the afm, while the engine was idling I unpluged the afm and the engine quit almost immediatly, is this normal? When I unplugged the 02 sensor the engine ran like crap, plugged it back it and engine ran fine. Ive replaced the temp sensor that didnt help new fuel pump, checked the ICV with a know good one no difference thanks for any help.

If nothing happens when you unplug it, then your AFM is bad. Since it died almost immediately, then it is doing it's job metering air in your intake. check for vacuum leaks and check that your coolant level sensor is working(I know this sounds crazy but I've seen it cause engines to die in the past). there's an elbow-looking hose underneath you throttle-body that heads to the charcoal canister. check it for any cracks. this doesn't really sound like a fuel pump issue, but fill your gas tank to the brim and try to fire it up. If it doesn't want to start then you have your answer. Filling up with a new tank of gas will hammer the last nail in the coffin for fuel pumps. Check to make sure your harmonic balancer is aligned with the crank sensor and test that the crank sensor is good.

They symptoms described strongly suggest intake leaks. Have a smoke test run and fix the leaks it uncovers.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

i have the same problem occasionally, even after replacing the intake and throttle body gaskets, and all of the hoses. i need a new intake boot, the electrical tape holding it together isnt quite up to par
